Ebola Virus Disease Awareness Campaign Strengthens Community Preparedness in Yei

Yei, South Sudan – RECONCILE International continues to stand alongside communities in promoting health, safety, and resilience through an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) awareness campaign in Yei and surrounding areas.As a border region with frequent movement of people between South Sudan, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Yei remains vulnerable to the risk of infectious disease outbreaks. Community awareness and preparedness are therefore essential in preventing the spread of Ebola and protecting lives.

The campaign brought together community leaders, faith leaders, youth representatives, women’s groups, and local residents to increase understanding of Ebola Virus Disease, its symptoms, modes of transmission, and prevention measures. Participants received accurate information on how the virus spreads and the actions communities can take to reduce risks.

During the awareness sessions, facilitators emphasized key prevention messages including regular handwashing with soap and clean water, avoiding direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, reporting suspected cases to health authorities, and following safe burial practices. Community members were also encouraged to seek information from trusted health sources and avoid misinformation that can create fear and stigma.Faith leaders played a critical role in sharing health messages and encouraging responsible behavior within churches, mosques, and community gatherings. Their involvement demonstrates the importance of collective action in safeguarding public health and strengthening community resilience.The campaign also highlighted the need for early detection and rapid reporting of suspected cases. Participants were reminded that timely medical attention can help prevent further transmission and improve response efforts.
